At Turner Home, we believe that caring for our planet is a collective responsibility. Each step we take toward environmental sustainability is a testament to our commitment to reducing our impact on the climate. This year, we embarked on a transformative journey to make meaningful changes in our operations, fostering a greener and more sustainable future.
Taking the First Step: Measuring Our Impact
In the spring, we partnered with the Key Fund and applied for the Energy Resilience Fund. This collaboration marked the beginning of our path toward energy efficiency. As part of the process, we conducted an Energy Resilience Assessment, which revealed our carbon emissions for 2023—an estimated 259.7 tones of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). Understanding our carbon footprint was the crucial first step toward making impactful changes.
The assessment didn’t just provide numbers; it gave us actionable insights. It highlighted specific opportunities to reduce our emissions, serving as a roadmap for the future.
Implementing Change: The Power of LED Intelligent Lighting
Through the Resilience Fund, we are implementing energy-efficient LED intelligent lighting across our facilities. This initiative alone is projected to reduce our carbon footprint by an impressive 51.5 tCO2e annually.
Beyond Lighting: Establishing a Green Plan
Our dedication doesn’t stop with energy-efficient lighting. We established an in-house working group comprising colleagues from various departments who are deeply committed to environmental sustainability. Together, we devised the Turner Home 2024-2026 Green Plan— our strategy for embedding sustainable practices across all aspects of our operations.
Actions Underway: Turning Vision Into Reality
We’ve already made significant strides in executing the Green Plan. Here are some of the actions we’ve completed or initiated:
"Gloves Off" Campaign: We launched campaign aiming at reducing the use of disposable gloves and promoting sustainable alternatives.
Sustainable Paper Usage: We transitioned from blue rolls to single-sheet dispensers to minimize paper waste.
Waste Management Overhaul: Our teams conducted a comprehensive review of our current waste management contract to ensure alignment with our sustainability policies and objectives.
Milk Tap System: Our Head Chef replaced milk bottles with a milk tap system, streamlining the process and reducing packaging waste by over 5000 plastic bottles a year.
Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Future
Our journey is far from over. We have many more initiatives in the pipeline as part of our Green Plan. Each action we take brings us closer to creating a positive environmental legacy for Turner Home.
Sustainability is a continuous effort, and we’re committed to exploring innovative solutions, collaborating with partners, and engaging our community in this vital mission.
Together, we can make a difference. At Turner Home, we’re proud to play our part in building a healthier planet for future generations.
